The DHCP server can be configured to assign additional parameters such as the IP address of the domain name system (DNS) server and the default router. IP Address reservation is a commonly used feature in any DHCP deployment. You may want to have fixed IPs for certain hosts (like printers, BMS devices) without configuring them for static IPs. All other hosts will get dynamically assign IP without having a requirement to keep the same IP all the time. In this post. DHCP Reservations on a Cisco RV Posted on October 4, by Mark Berry. The Cisco RV router lets you bind a MAC address to an IP address. Normally you would think that would reserve the address for assignment via DHCP, but the documentation states very clearly on p. 49, "Binding does not assign an IP address to a device.".
DHCP manual bindings/reservations don't work when using hardware-address. We have used manual bindings in a limited fashion and can assign them fine if we use the "client-identifier" as the matching criteria; The problem is we need to expand our usage of them but don't want to depend on the client machines having a properly filled in "dhcp client-id" field. I tried around with defining a dhcp pool over the whole network, exluded (reserved for static adresses) and added for any reservation a seperate pool (manual binding), but this only did prevent the dhcp server to give this adress to anyboby, even not the machine i reserved it for . see config below:!.
